We were here 3/1/15: Everything was great except for the prices. We had lobster because we were in Maine, but it really didn't taste any differently than the lobster we'd had in other states. I was brought here by a friend and rather buoyed by the hype, but I didn't really see or taste anything to brag about in this place.

A decent place to come and eat. We were in Portland for a family vacation and was looking for a good seafood place with decent price and was glad we found here. Very surprised they close so early at 8pm. We ordered the twin lobsters with Cole slaw and french fries and a order of their mussels. Food took a while to come out. And the lobsters was a lot smaller than I expected. But at $25 for 2 lobsters I guess I can't complaint. The lobsters were a bit overcooked and hard to chew. But you can taste that it was very fresh. Nothing too special with the mussels. It was just regular steam mussels served with butter sauce. Self service. You order the food at the counter and pick your own table to sit. Place was very clean. And people working there was very friendly Overall a solid and decent place if you are in the area

I ordered a lobster roll for $11.99 & a luncheon plate of fried clams for $6.99. Overall I believe these prices to be pretty cheap. The lobster roll had a good amount of lobster in it but lacked flavor and didn't hit the spot like usual. The roll was very plain and thicker than a hot dog bun but I found myself ripping a lot of it off. The clams lacked bellys & overall were very small strips battered. Kind of rubbery. Was super disappointed with the clam plate since I was craving them for weeks. My companion ordered a fried haddock sandwich and he reported that it was a little on the plain size but at an average price of $8 I guess he got what he paid for. He also ordered a bay scallop dinner and they were rather small with the batter being a bit on the gooey side. The staff was very friendly so a star is deserved in that aspect. I do believe in 2nd chances and will go back to try other things from the menu. Perhaps for their happy hour from 3-6 where they offer a POUND of mussels for $5.99!!!

I want to give these guys the benefit of the doubt because I love the fact that it is not touristy, that you can call ahead and get food to go, and that they have a friendly staff. We have gone before and been satisfied, but last night, the fried clams we got were just okay - nothing horrible, but nothing I would go back for either. I hope that they get some more flavor in their food - and a little less soggy - but until then, I will be looking around for other places.

The place was nice, the food was good but the folks serving really made the place. Great folks with big smile and a Ron of patients for us out of towners, trying not to look like tourist. Their prices are fair and they will even give you a small sample of you ask nicely. I will be back, next time that I am in Portland

We're lobster fanatics in South Portland Maine in December. The lobster pounds are closed. Everyone has huddled together for the winter. Still, if you seek out the right places - ye shall find. Yes, lobster and seafood is still served! You just have to find the local places. And Docks Seafood is one such. We each ordered our requisite lobster, as well as mussels. Yum e yum yum. After driving around during the day, you'd think that - somehow lobster season ended - even here on the South Portland coast. But no - that's not true. You just have to find places like this. Why only four stars? Lobster was a bit overcooked, so were the mussels - but at least you could order and enjoy.

My normal place was closed due to holiday, so I solicited advice from my staff and was given Dock's as an alternative for a decent fried seafood platter. I called to verify they were open on the holiday - they were, so I visited later that evening for a meal. This is a non-touristy location, off the beaten path. The staff/owners were nice and made me feel welcome. I ordered a fried seafood platter with clam strips, shrimp, and scallops. This comes with fries or baker, cole slaw, roll and butter, for $19.99. You get up charged $2.50 for O-rings if you want to sub them for fries or baked potato. I was slightly put off by the $2 charge for taking your food to go, but it's cool. I ordered and was asked to wait for the food to be cooked to order. No problem. The location is clean, bright and has free wifi. I waited about 10 minutes and my number was called. Condiments were offered, and off I went. The food was decent. I have an entire box of fries left over after eating as many as I could. They were good - cooked with the skins on. Vinegar would be nice, but it was not offered. The clam strips were decent and crunchy, albeit lacking a bit of flavor. The shrimp and scallops were plentiful as well, but, too, lacked flavor. The cole slaw - forget it. I took a bite and it was 100% tasteless. Even a spoonful of Marzetti's would have been appreciated - no such luck. Others commented on the thimble size containers of condiments. The tarter was good to fair, but the cocktail sauce was this gelled concoction that I had to stir up to loosen it/un-gel it. Even still, it was like cocktail sauce pudding. Odd. In addition, you only got two thimble of each. Loosen the purse strings and give us more. The seafood was decent but for certain, needed these extra condiments. Docks rates a firm 3 stars in my book. The food was decent but nothing spectacular. You get a lot but the $2 hit to take your food to go, and then they go cheap on the condiments, was questionable and I took a star away for that. Figure out what is going on with your cocktail sauce, please! Chowderheads is my go to place in south Maine when I visit, as is Bayley's on Pine Point road. Docks need a little help to get them out of that ho-hum two star status. Mediocre is a good word for their food. The service was great and that may grant some a repeat visit. I am a seafood fan however so I will thank them for the meal, but keep on down the line to my established favorites.

On our first night of our fall week in Maine, we had dinner at Docks. This is a no-frills, BYOB kind of place. We had fried clams, which were yummy, and corn crab chowder, which was good but not the best I've had. (I think that a little hot sauce would have been a nice addition.) We also had the potato skins with crabmeat and cheese, but you should bypass that for something better... like the homemade pies,, which looked delicious!

As good as any other fried fish place; maybe even a step above -- crispy, fresh fish and great cole slaw AND they will prepare your fish in different ways -- baked, broiled -- just ask. The owners and staff are more than friendly and I'm glad they are in the neighborhood. Plus, they sell fresh fish to take home -- which is always fresh and well priced.

It's higher than 3, but I can't really give it a 4 star. Had the corn and lobster chowder, lobster roll, fries, and cole slaw. I'm no expert in lobster rolls, but this was better than what i experienced at a different place in Portland. Had really good flavor. Portions are small tho (i think most places are the same). The lobster/corn chowder was ok, but it wasn't as thick as i would've liked and definitely not as full of flavor and rich as good ones i've had elsewhere. Fries were freshly cut, but i'm not a huge fan on those kind of fries. Cole slaw was also fresh and crisp, but i prefer a kfc type one. Prices are ok and portions are kind of small. There is no table service; you order at the counter and pay there. There's a decent amount of tables to sit and eat. Place is really clean. Service is amazingly friendly and good. Beautiful service and smiles and greetings all around.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. If you're looking for wallet friendly, good seafood, go here! The BYOB will save you plenty of money and you order at the counter (no need to tip, but we did). The haddock was very good, and the lobster roll was even better. They had a special tonight, Lobster roll, fries and cole slaw for $13.99 and the lobster roll was stuffed full! Does it get better than that?

It took me way too long to try this place and I am SO glad I finally made a point to stop in... it was AMAZING! Extremely fresh seafood, you can get baked, broiled or fried, and the portions are beyond huge! You could easily make two or three meals out of each serving, or you could eat it all and not feel the least bit guilty, like my dining partners and I did :) There can be a bit of a wait for your food to be ready, but it's BYOB which makes the wait much more tolerable!

I've picked up raw seafood to cook at home from Dock's a number of times (including the MIND-BLOWING crab cakes), and the occasional (very solid) lobster roll to share with a visiting friend, but got hot take-out for the first time last night. Not impressed. When I called in my order, I was warned that it would take about 25 minutes for our food to be prepared - which seemed reasonable for freshly-cooked seafood - but should have taken the clerk's slightly discouraging tone seriously. I will say that the fish and seafood were all very fresh, but...the fried platter was stone-cold and soggy, the seared tuna on our salad was very overcooked, and the cocktail sauce was a solid, congealed block (how?!). An order of lobster stew was left out of our order, as well, and when we returned to pick it up, the very polite staff seemed unfazed. My husband reported that the food we'd already tasted at home was cold/overcooked/etc... and while an apology was offered, it was with the attitude of "oh well, we're busy, too bad." What a shame. I guess I'll just continue to use them as a fish market rather than a restaurant.

I'm only in Maine for one night, so I was determined to spend it well, preferably with a lobster. A quick yelp search brought up this spot, just a ten minute drive from my hotel, and the ratings were high, so I decided to check it out. Since January isn't exactly peak season, I was worried there might not be much of a fresh selection, but thankfully, I was wrong. After quickly scanning the menu board, I chose the lobster dinner, a steamed lobster served with fries and coleslaw for $13.95. Had I known how darn cheap the "market price" was going to be, I would have ordered the double!! Alas, I went with the single, and enjoyed every bite. I asked for it to be cracked, and the chef actually kindly cleaned it for me, leaving just the tail in the shell, which made for pleasant, easy eating. Docks has an easy-going, laid-back feel. The staff was super friendly and welcoming. You order and pay at the counter, then find yourself a seat at a plastic-topped tables. Lobsters await their saunas in a tank by some of the tables, which assures freshness and entertains the kids. There didn't appear to be a ton of seating, though I suppose during warmer months you can eat outside. There are newspapers for those who are passing time waiting for take-out, which also makes this a friendly place for single diners. If I'm ever back in the South Portland area, you can bet I'll be stopping at Docks!

How have I not reviewed them yet??? Cheap, home style eats with steamed and fried seafood. Fish market on site. Lobster prices are as good or better than downtown. They close at 8 PM most nights so don't be late. Indoor and outdoor seating with BYOB allowed!!! Only complaint is that sometimes food takes a little while, but it is always worth the wait.

Solid food, good scallops and fries. Good lobster rolls. Quick service and very friendly and clean. I would definitely go back.

After living in Maine for five years. Docks is without a doubt one of Maine's best kept secrets. The food is fresh, large portions and delicious. The Haddock Dinner is my favorite. Every thing you order is made fresh. Not too long of a wait. Reasonably priced and the staff is friendly and helpful while ordering. They could use a few more table during the winter months. If visiting the Portland, Maine area you will not be disappointed when you visit the dock. It is off the beaten path, so get a map and find Evan St. South Portland. Have since moved from the area. I will miss their great meals. I am picky about where I order fish. This is the best. Fresh Fresh Fresh................so important when ordering fish. You will love it. Every meal comes with a dinner roll. The dinner rolls are great as well.

A Friday night in Lent, and "the joint was jumping." We had fried scallops (good), baked scallops (very good) and grilled tuna seasoned with lemon pepper (not so good). BYOW makes it most reasonable along with reasonable prices too. Not lots of tables, but clean and helpful staff. As a local, we will return as the seafood was fresh and it was a good evening. Went again on 9/14/14 and all the above is true. Just don't be in a hurry to be served. It took 30 minutes for baked haddock and fried shrimp

This place was really great! We're visiting from New York and staying in Kittery but we decided to drive up to Portland. We'd been hearing a lot about Bob's Clam Shack in Kittery but they were pretty expensive! (I thought seafood was cheaper in Maine?) Anyway, we were looking for some great fried seafood and this place did it for us! We got the combo number 2, and got shrimp, calamari, French Fries, cole slaw, and a roll for 16.99! It was big enough for two people to share! We also got a cup of lobster bisque, it was okay, but I thought it needed something. But the lobster bisque did have plenty of big chunks of lobster! The staff was super friendly and our food came out quick! If I lived in Maine, I'd definitely come back! It was super casual, no waitress service, but the woman did bring our food over to us, which was great!! Great experience, loved it!

Tried the fried food via the haddock and shrimp with fries and cole slaw. Nothing memorable - not bad but nothing special. Cole slaw was tasteless. She had the double lobster dinner which was a bad idea for someone who had never ripped one apart before. By the time she got to the meat, it was cold. In the end, she said it didnt taste any better than what you get in a fine restaurant. But to end on a positive note, the moon pies were good.

I had lunch a few weeks ago with some friends while visiting Portland. We all shared a whole lobster, clam strips, crab cakes, a lobster roll, fries and corn. Everything was very good. The lobster was (of course) pulled from a tank right in front of us, the crab cakes were very fresh, the clams were really good and so was the lobster roll. Prices were very affordable, especially for lunch. The restaurant was clean and staff were friendly. Free WiFi was a nice added bonus. As a side note, there was a gentleman who appeared rather high-strung, loudly talking on his phone chastising someone. He was most likely from an, uhh, larger city. Just as he was really starting to raise his voice, an older man who appeared to be a local kindly walked over to him and asked him to quiet down. The loud guy looked at the local and said, "what's your problem with me?" to which the local replied still calm, "I'm just trying to eat my lunch." The loud guy yelled that maybe he would just go outside. I'm pretty sure Mr. Loud left his lunch on the table and never came back. Thank you for your calm resolution of Mr. Loud, unknown Porland citizen.

Very bland food, period. Calamari (fresh) had no flavor. sweet potato fries, bland and overcooked (not fresh) did not taste like sweet potatoes. Scallops Wrapped in Bacon, the size of a quarter around and just as tall, also overcooked. They must carefully slice the bacon slices in half across the length of it. Sorry, bad experience. People were nice, place was nice too.

This is a nice little spot. And fun fact, it's byob! Dock's is a great local joint that offers everything from lobster rolls to corn on the cob to grilled chicken. The Haddock taco was delicious though there is too much fish for one tortilla. The flavors are impeccable but would be better with two tortillas. Be prepared for a wait. We had to wait 45 minutes for simple food. If you have time byob and enjoy the nice picnic tables out front.

Incredibly disappointed in our meal. The baked haddock had a 1/2 cup of bread crumbs dumped on top and baked till dry. No flavor, spice, just terrible. This is seafood cooking that shouldn't be done. Potato was small and soggy. Cole slaw was tasteless. As a Mainer we're used to excellent seafood, this was just tasteless, bland, and overcooked. I felt like I just had dinner at a nursing home. In hindsight I should have gone down to Harbor Fish and bought my own fresh fish to do on the grill. Save your money and pallet and skip this place. $35 down the drain. I called to complain when we got home and they said the owner was too busy to take the call. If the owner was cooking, I'll assume, then it's worse than I thought. If you want good seafood there are lots of better places in the Portland area.

Best fish and chips in Maine. Beats all the other local seafood places. The prices are really affordable and the staff is super friendly,

  • Riccardo S.

Fantastic little fried seafood place a little outside of town, and therefore away from the crowds which can sometimes be found in high-summer Portland. Come here with a little bit of patience - everything is cooked on demand and therefore exceptionally fresh. While most of the food is fried, there are grilled and steamed options, but even when you get things fried it's easy to tell that the oil isn't overused nor are things kept under for too long. Really good lobster roll, bisque, calamari, scallops, clam strips, onion rings, and especially the lobster quesadilla. Docks is very kid-friendly, helpful as I had been here with my godchildren, and they got very well taken care of by the staff (read: fawned over). It's BYOB, and no muss and no fuss about it. Just stop by Broadway Variety on your way here, and you'll be set.

Ate here last night on our way up from Boston. Very fresh, delicious seafood at low prices. You order at the counter and sit down at your table. They call your number when it is ready. Scallops, clams, haddock and fries were all excellent. Clean, pleasant place with tables inside and out. Everything we had was fried, but the breaking was light...all very nicely done.

  • G C.

Go to Docks often as it's close to home and offers take out. Love the lobster roll. Always fresh, very little mayo and a fair amount of meat for the price. They'll also grill the roll on request. The fries are pretty good, but I prefer crispy and these are not. On the plus side, they do have vinegar available for the fries. The coleslaw needs some help. It's pretty tasteless and needs something to give it that slaw zing. The people working there are very friendly and seem to appreciate the business.

  • Wayne R.

Food was okay, how hard is it to mess up this type of food? Staff was friendly, but the speed of service sucked. The place was pretty much empty, maybe 20 people, and took 40 minutes to get out dinner. Unacceptable in my book.

I have a couple of regrets surrounding Docks Seafood: 1. that I didn't stumble upon it sooner, and 2. that I didn't eat there on my last night in South Portland. My boyfriend and I were visiting Portland on Memorial Day weekend for some good lobster eats and scenic attractions. On the first day we were there, we went to Commercial Street and chowed down on some lobster meals that were not too kind on my wallet. This is expected of course, because it's such a tourist attraction. Docks Seafood is not so much touristy, but has more of a good ol' small town neighborhood vibe. There was indoor and outdoor seating, and it was a very casual environment. We ordered 2 twin lobster meals (4 lobsters in total, and included cole slaw and french fries) and corn chowder soup. All of that was ~$50.00!!! Crazy to us, since we paid a little less than that amount for a single meal the day before. There was a 15-20 minute wait time, due to the meals being made to order. The lobsters and soup were good, and the cole slaw was great too. If you're looking for a casual night with great and affordable eats when visiting Portland - this is it. It's really as simple as that. I'll definitely come back here the next time I visit the area!

  • Emily S.

Staff was really friendly. Food was pretty good, nothing to rave about. They do have items that aren't fried, so I'm not sure why all the reviews say fried food only. They also have pretty good prices on live lobster and other uncooked seafood. The best part was they were open at the end of November.

  • Kate S.

Kind of a bummer given our proximity. Then again, not a huge shock given the proximity to a parking lot. Fried clams - meh. Lobster roll - meh. Bun not toasted, all claw meat, not the freshest. Fries - double meh. Prices & unlimited to-go malt vinegar - bumped them to 3 stars. Intrigued by their fresh seafood for sale & will return for that reason.

Stopped at Docks on our way to our destination in Cape Elizabeth. Called ahead and they steamed 5 1 1/2 pound lobsters for us. Was so looking forward to lobster on our first night in Maine and they did not disappoint us. Food was excellent! Will be back when in town again. Crowded.

Stayed at Hampton Inn near the mall and this place is only a few minutes drive. So worth it because the folks are friendly and accommodating. You've got to try the clams called Steamers. It's a little messy getting to the meat of the clam but again, so worth it. The lobster platter special was just under $20 and comes with two 1 lb lobsters that you see them picking from the water tank and steamed to your order. Should definitely pay a couple of bucks to replace french fries for the sweet potato fries; they are so good. My 10 yo daughter couldn't get enough. We ate there twice in one day, lunch and dinner, in total: 3 lobsters, two pounds of steamers, one salmon, one lobster roll, and about 1.5 quart of clam chowder, which was also very good. Oh we added a sauteed veg on the side and it was good too. Make sure you tip the lady that takes your order at the counter. I don't think she gets tipped enough. Our family loved this place. A big thank you!

Stumbled upon Dock's while passing through South Portland to visit a client. We thought it looked like a nice local -- non-touristy -- place to stop for lunch. We were well-rewarded -- eating "lobsta" where the locals do... It took some adjusting to the system here -- order and prepay at the counter and then wait for your number to be called. In the meantime, we sat near the lobster tanks and ogled the dozens of little devils who would soon be enjoying a sauna. Anyway, while the service was more akin to fast food, what came out on the tray was mouth-watering. We both got the "lazy lobster" -- double lobsters with all of the work done. Prices here were very reasonable. Highly recommended if looking for a quick lobsta lunch.

Seafood done right at really reasonable prices. Yes, it's all fried, but it's cooked to order and it's not as deep-fried as some other places. I had the Haddock Dinner and it was completely yummy. The staff was really friendly, which lended itself to a pleasant atmosphere. Would return in a heartbeat.

Was in Portland on a Sunday afternoon and every other place was either too crowded, out of lobster, or way overpriced. This place was off our track but we were happy we stopped! Very good lobster meal and reasonably priced. We had two lobsters, fried clams, and salmon for less than $50 AND the quality was very good. Only 4 stars because the salmon could have had less sauce. Very casual place.

  • Sam M.

I'm no seafood aficionado but i found their fried clams/haddock platter to be mediocre in taste. I was very unimpressed with the portions, especially given their prices. The wait for the food was about 30-40 minutes which did not meet my expectations. Not a bad experience by any means but if I am paying over $20 for a meal, i hope to enjoy it and be full at the end of it and at Dock's, i was not.

It's fried seafood, good but not great. No table service, very casual. Ended up here because it was raining and places downtown were full. Great for for kids/babies, you can be plenty loud. They had some picnic tables outside.

In town for one night and I made it to Dock's for a meal. The food was great and made with top ingredients. The staff was friendly and the place was exactly what you would like to see in a neighborhood place. I will be going back next time I am in town.

I was working in Scarboro today and looked for a quick bite to show case a lobsta roll to a west coast business associate. This place was clean and the food was good. Lobster roll could have had more mayo IMO, but it was heaped with meat. Nice find in South Portland.
